Half Past Normal: Finding Quiet Through Nature Photography

I've never been interested in photographing as many places as possible. I'd rather return to the same woodland, garden or stretch of coastline and see what has changed. Sometimes it's the light. Sometimes it's the season. Sometimes it's only a single flower that wasn't there before.
Half Past Normal is where I collect those moments. It's an evolving archive of nature, landscape, wildlife and travel photography from England, Portugal and the places in between—not a search for perfect photographs, but a record of places that continue to draw me back.
If you enjoy walking, travelling or simply taking the time to notice what's around you, I hope you'll feel at home here. This blog is where I'll share the stories behind the photographs, the places they were taken, and the quiet observations that rarely fit beneath a single image.
Discovering the Purpose Behind Half Past Normal
Half Past Normal grew from a habit of returning to the same places. Some are close to home in England, others are places I've come back to in Portugal, but all of them have something that makes me want to visit again. They remind me that no landscape stays the same for long.
Rather than chasing new locations every weekend, I'm more interested in seeing how familiar places change. A woodland in spring tells a different story in autumn. A stretch of coastline looks completely different depending on the weather, the tide or the time of day. Even the smallest details—a flower beginning to bloom or a bird appearing where it wasn't before—can make a familiar scene feel new.
Half Past Normal has become an archive of those moments. It brings together landscapes, wildlife, gardens, coastlines and the quieter details that often go unnoticed. Many of the photographs come from National Trust properties, local walks and places I've returned to over the years, gradually building a collection that reflects the changing seasons rather than a single visit.

A Slower Approach to Nature Photography
I rarely arrive somewhere expecting to take a particular photograph. Most visits begin with a walk, seeing what catches my attention rather than following a plan. Sometimes I leave with a landscape. Sometimes it's a flower growing at the edge of a path or a bird that appears for only a few seconds.
Returning throughout the year has taught me that the smallest changes are often the most rewarding. Different light, shifting weather and changing seasons can completely transform a familiar place. A location I've photographed many times still has something new to offer if I'm prepared to slow down and look.
That same approach shapes every part of my photography. Whether I'm exploring a National Trust garden, walking a coastline or photographing wildlife, I'm not searching for perfection. I'm interested in the character of a place and the quiet details that reveal themselves over time. Often, they're the moments that would be easy to miss if I hurried past.
Exploring England and Portugal Through the Lens
England and Portugal have become the two places that shape most of my photography. Although they're very different, they share something I keep coming back to—a sense that slowing down reveals far more than rushing from one location to the next.
In England, many of my photographs come from National Trust properties, local woodlands, coastlines and countryside walks. The changing seasons mean the same place can feel completely different from one visit to the next, whether it's spring blossom, autumn colour or the stillness of a frosty morning.
Portugal offers a different rhythm. The light is warmer, the landscapes more open, and the gardens, wildflowers and coastline all have their own character. Time spent there has become an important part of the archive, adding another perspective while keeping the same approach of returning, observing and photographing places over time.
Together, these two countries have shaped the way I see the natural world. Half Past Normal is my way of sharing that journey, one photograph at a time.
What You'll Find Here
Half Past Normal is more than a place to share photographs. It's where I can tell the stories behind them, return to places that continue to change, and write about the moments that often go unnoticed.
Some posts will focus on particular locations, while others will explore the quieter side of photography—paying attention, returning to familiar landscapes, and discovering something different each time.
You can expect to find:
Favourite places to photograph across England and Portugal
Seasonal changes in landscapes, gardens and wildlife
Stories behind individual photographs and the moments that led to them
Reflections on photographing nature with patience rather than urgency
Occasional thoughts on cameras, techniques and the creative process
If these photographs encourage someone to spend a little longer outdoors, revisit a favourite place or notice something they might otherwise have walked past, then Half Past Normal is doing exactly what I hoped it would.

Returning to the Same Places to See Change
Some of my favourite photographs have come from places I've visited more than once. Returning to the same woodland, garden or stretch of coastline means I stop looking for somewhere new and start noticing what's changed instead.
Sometimes it's obvious—the colours of autumn replacing the fresh greens of spring. Other times it's far more subtle: different light, shifting shadows, a flower that wasn't there before, or wildlife appearing where I'd walked past dozens of times.
That's one of the reasons Half Past Normal exists. It's less about collecting new destinations and more about building an archive of familiar places as they change over time. I hope it encourages others to slow down, revisit somewhere they already know, and discover that even the most familiar landscape always has something new to offer.
An Invitation to Explore
If you'd like to see more, take a look through the galleries. They bring together photographs from England and Portugal, from wide landscapes to the smaller details that are easy to overlook.
This archive is still growing. I'll continue adding new photographs, revisiting familiar places and sharing the stories behind them as the seasons change.
If you find yourself returning here from time to time, I hope you'll discover something different with each visit—just as I do when I return to the places behind the photographs.
